The Government of Canada's Workplace Hazardous Materials Bureau announced on 19 May 2017 via email that compliance with the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) will incur a one-year delay. New transition deadlines are now extended until 2018 for Phase 1 of the HPR, and additional three months have be added to comply under Phase 2 of the HPR.

Modified on 11 February 2015, WHMIS 2015 incorporated the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling for Chemicals (GHS) for workplace chemicals in Canada The implementation is accompanied by a three-stage transition period. Phase 1 of said period was set to start on 1 June 2017. However, manufacturers and importers now have until 1 June 2018 to comply with the HPR. Likewise, the second deadline 1 June 2018 has been delayed by three months until 1 September 2018. The announcement also stated that the target deadline set for employers by federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) agencies responsible for occupational safety and health (OSH) in the workplace will remain unchanged at 1 December 2018.
