SDS Data Quality: What poor data actually cost your business

Poor SDS data quality costs more than most organizations can measure. New research from Verdantix, commissioned by 3E, puts figures against five risk areas and found average estimated impacts above $1 million in every one.

Those costs rarely sit in one place. They spread across EHS, supply chain, product stewardship and IT, so no single budget owner sees the total. That is usually why the investment stalls, not because anyone disputes the risk.

The five risk areas covered:

• Regulatory citations and fines
• Worker safety and emergency-response failures
• Market access and trade disruption
• Product loss, recall and holding costs
• AI amplification of poor data

Each is examined on its own, with the benchmarks respondents gave for what a single event costs. One of the five returns a result most readers do not expect.

This report was commissioned by 3E and independently analyzed and written by Verdantix, a research and advisory firm. The findings draw on a survey of 52 EHS leaders at global companies, five practitioner interviews, and analysis of public enforcement and trade data. Respondents span chemicals, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, consumer products and agriculture.
