Compared to the previous version of the Regulations on Nutrition Labeling for Prepackaged Food Products, which was issued on 15 April 2014, the following major revisions have been introduced by the Amendments:
  • The required content and format of nutrition labels for prepackaged food products are revised to include additional information. Examples of this information include serving size and how many servings there are in the container. Nutrients that are identified under the Regulations on Nutritional Claims for Prepackaged Food Products (包裝食品營養宣稱應遵行事項), such as trans fat and cholesterol must also be present on the nutrition label for prepackaged food products;
  • Units permitted on nutrition labels are revised to include widely accepted units in English, such as ‘g’, ‘mL’, and ‘Kcal’. Previously, these units could only be presented on a nutrition label in Chinese;
  • Data formatting of prepackaged food nutrition labeling units have also been revised. For instance, when it is not feasible to determine the weight of a prepackaged food product, it is permitted to mark the approximate product weight on the label followed by the word "Approximate" (約).
The Amendment became effective on 31 March 2018.

Verisk 3E Analysis

Companies that manufacture or import food products in Taiwan might need to revise the nutrition labels for their prepackaged food products, as required by the newly issued amendments of the Regulations on Nutrition Labeling for Prepackaged Food Products. For instance, nutrition labels for prepackaged food products must include information as to serving size and how many servings there are in the product container. Affected companies should review their nutrition labels and ensure compliance with the revised labeling regulations.
