From supplier data to compliance action
A DPP records what a product is made of, where it came from, and which regulations it meets. Collecting the data is only the start. Teams also need to know whether it holds up against current requirements, where the gaps are, and what to do next.
3E Exchange checks supplier data before it’s accepted, scores it against 3E’s regulatory intelligence, and shows your team what’s missing, what matters, and what to do next. Passports update as product and compliance data changes, so what you share stays current.

Digital Product Passports: inside the two-sided compliance backbone supporting DPP readiness
EU battery passports are required from Feb. 18, 2027
The EU Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542) makes a battery passport mandatory from Feb. 18, 2027, for each EV battery, light means of transport (LMT) battery, such as e-bike and e-scooter batteries, and industrial battery over 2 kWh placed on the EU market or put into service.
The passport is one requirement among many. The regulation also covers substance limits, labeling, carbon footprint, recycled content, due diligence, and more. Its duties also reach well beyond the company that places a battery on the market, to component suppliers and to non-EU manufacturers whose customers can’t sell without their data.
Whether a passport applies is decided item by item: what the product is, where it’s going, and your position in the supply chain for that product.
Battery passport FAQ
-
Which batteries need an EU battery passport?
EV batteries, light means of transport (LMT) batteries, and industrial batteries over 2 kWh need a battery passport when they’re placed on the EU market or put into service. Portable and SLI (starting, lighting, ignition) batteries don’t need one, but other parts of the EU Battery Regulation still apply to them.
-
When is the EU battery passport deadline?
The battery passport is required from Feb. 18, 2027. Other obligations phase in around it: due diligence starts Aug. 18, 2027, generally for operators with turnover of €40 million or more, and recycled content requirements begin from Aug. 18, 2028, or later.
-
Who is responsible for the battery passport?
Under the EU Battery Regulation, the operator that places the battery on the EU market or puts it into service is responsible for the battery passport. That can be the manufacturer, an EU importer, an own-brand importer or distributor, or a remanufacturer. With written authorization, another party, such as a non-EU manufacturer, can create or update the passport, but legal responsibility stays with the operator placing the battery on the market.
-
Do battery suppliers have obligations if no passport is needed?
Often, yes. Under the EU Battery Regulation, the battery passport belongs to the finished battery, not its cells or modules, unless they’re sold for end use as batteries. Cell and module suppliers must still provide necessary information and documentation to manufacturers free of charge, and other component and material suppliers hold data their customers need to comply.
